How Often Should I Get a Dental Checkup?

Nearly everyone knows that brushing and flossing daily helps to keep your teeth and gums in good condition. Eating a healthy diet and drinking water also help with your oral health. In addition to this, it is important to schedule regular maintenance exams with your dentist. But how often should you see your dentist for a dental checkup?

Are Biannual Dental Checkups Enough?

Most people understand that you should visit your dentist at least twice a year for a dental checkup. This will allow the dental team to clean your teeth and gums, as well as assess your overall oral health. However, another reason dental insurers and patients believe two visits a year is the standard is because of an ad campaign from the 1920s and 1930s. This campaign for Pepsodent was placed at the end of the Amos and Andy broadcast. The ADA, as well as most insurance companies, then took it upon themselves to stress biannual checkups.

Although every six months or so is average, some people may have to go more often, depending on the quality of their oral health. People on certain medications, pregnant women, or those who use tobacco products regularly may need to see their dentist more often. Likewise, people who are predisposed to gum disease, whether through their oral hygiene habits or genetics, may need a dental checkup more often.

What Does a Dental Checkup Entail?

A dental checkup usually means cleaning teeth and gums, as well as checking for any early indicators of oral cancer. You will also get periodic X-rays, and may even undergo specialized treatment if you have certain special needs or health issues. The main goal is to keep up with preventative care and find out if your teeth and gums need any restorative work to keep them at their optimum.

While you are at the dentist, you can discuss any other issues or needs. This is a good time to look into things such as teeth whitening, braces or Invisalign, as well as have all your questions answered.

Whitmore Dental will give you a personalized custom evaluation to determine how often you should come to the office to keep you healthy. Some patients may be able to manage this every 12 months, but for others the interval may be every eight to ten weeks.

These appointments are customized for your needs. Each situation is unique. Are you a high risk for cavities or gum disease? Because of this, your dental care is personalized to match exactly what will keep you healthy.
