What you put in your body is a big factor in all aspects of your general health. You already know a proper diet affects your energy levels, your levels of fitness (especially for those who exercise regularly), and brain function. It also affects your oral health. Many studies have shown the connection between oral health and disease prevention. The studies also show the systemic connection between your mouth and your body. Proper dental hygiene is as important for your general health as getting regular exercise and eating well.
Oral Bacteria
A normal mouth has billions of bacteria living in it. Bacteria feed on the particles of food on your teeth and gums left over from what you consume. What is not swallowed becomes bacteria food. Most of this is countered when you drink water, salivate, as well as brush and floss. This keeps bacteria in check and reduces the buildup of plaque.
What is Plaque?
Plaque is a biofilm of bacteria that build up over time. It is the film you can feel on your teeth. Over time, plaque will harden into tartar. Caring for teeth and gums reduces plaque. However, when regular care is not given, gums can begin to recede and bleed. Plaque and bacteria can then enter the bloodstream. The entrance into the bloodstream has linked plaque and bacteria to such illnesses and diseases as stroke, heart disease, and possibly Alzheimer’s. While there are many other factors due to the complexity of the body, it is just one risk. However, this risk can be eliminated by simply caring for teeth and gums.
The risk can be reduced by eating well, and limiting sweets, alcohol, and other food and beverages that are best taken in moderation. It can also be reduced by visiting your dentist for your regular dental checkup, usually twice a year.
